Science Project- Volcanoe

For the last couple of days, we have been working on making a valcano. We reasearched top 10 valcanoe's around the world, and chose Arenal Valcano.

The Arenal Valcano is a huge torrist attrction in Costa Rica, it is one of the most active valcanoe in Central America. Since a major eruption in 1968, that killed several people and threw bombs to 5km away. There has been near-continuous axtivity building a lava dome and showing mild explosive activity.

The valcanoe is 7,500 years old, it also doesnt just erupt lava, it also erupts, got gases, rocks, and ash.

aim: make a valcano that explodes.

method:

Get a flat piece of cardboard. (Or flatten a box).

Get a 700ml bottle and place it in the middle of the cardboard.

Make glue (a little salt, water, flour).

Get a lot of newspaper and scrunch it up into balls.

Use your glue to stick the scrunched up paper onto the bottle. (Repeat this until you have a pyramid volcano shape)

Rip strips of newspaper and place them onto the scrunched newspaper with glue to smooth out the volcano's surface.

Paint your volcano and try to get a reference volcano to paint to.

Put 50ml of H2O2, a drop of food colouring, and a squirt of soap into the bottle of your volcano.

In a beaker put 30ml of water, 2 spat of potassium iodide, and dissolve it by mixing it together.

Get outside and then put the beaker mixture into the volcano. WATCH IT ERUPT.

how valcanoe's are made:

A valcano form when one tectonic plate moves under another. usually a thin oceanic plate subducts or sometimes moves under a thicker continental, when enough magma builds up in a magma chamber, it makes it self move up the surface and errupts, often causing valcano erruptions.

Conclusion:

I wasnt there for it but i think that it turned out unique because everyone elses valcano erupted and the elephant toothpaste went upwards. but instead our one when in a snake kind of form and went side ways instead of upwards.

The great garbage patch.

 The reasoning:

The reasoning to the great garbage patch formed gradually as a result of the ocean and marine pollution gathered by the ocean and currents, because currents capture material, wind drives all the garbage to the middle of the pacific ocean and traps it.

The effect:

The great pacific garbage patch kills marine life. 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine animals animals are effected every year and a lot of other animals have been effected for example turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish.

Explanation:

For example the great pacific garbage patch is a lot of rubbish all cluttered together, where the rubbish all just sticks together. All the garbage together in the middle of the ocean has caused alot of marine animals to die... there was 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine animals that has died, there was also alot of turtles because turtles mistake plastic bags for jelly fish. Over 1 million animals were found with plastic inside them, washed up on the beach.

Shark finning 🤮

 What is shark finning?

-Shark finning is when people go out on bigggg fishing boat, to catch sharks and cut their fins off and release theyre bodies back into the ocean with no fins to let them die painfully. Sometimes they dont just cut the fins off but they take the whole shark and alot of marine animals. when catching them all in the big nets that they use, they will take the sharks back to docks and cut the fins off and more of their body.

Why is it a delicacy?

-Shark fin soap is considered a delicacy because a chinese emperor created it which is known as the golden era in chinese history. This dish was created as a sign of wealth, power and generosity.

How is this impacting the ocean?

-Sharks help keep the ocean in tact, and keep's the fishes from overpopulating.

Making Salts.

aim: To produce copper sulfate salt by reacting copper oxide with an acid.

equipment: Copper oxide powder,dilute,sulfuric acid,cylinder,beakers,bunsen burner,tripod,gauze mat,funnel,filter paper,thermometer,spatula,evaporating basin,stirring rod.

method:

  1. Add 20 ml of sulfuric acid to a 100ml beaker. heat the acid until it reaches 70'c. Turn off your bunsen burner.
  2. Once heated, use a spatula to ass pea-sized portions of copper oxide to the beaker. Stir the mixture for 30 seconds.
  3. Repeat step 2 until no more will dissolve. Allow the beaker to cool.
  4. Fold the filter paper and place it in the funnel. Place the filter funnel into the second beaker.
  5. Make sure the beaker is cool enough to hope at the top. The contents should still be hot. You may need your teacher to complete this step.
  6. Gently swirl the contents of the beaker to mix, and then pour into the filter paper in the funnel. Allow to filter through.
  7. Rinse the beaker you used to heat the mixture previously, and place it back on top of your tripod filled with 50-60 ml of water.
  8. Place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker and carefully pour some of the solution from the beaker into the evaporating basin.
  9. Gently heat the beaker until the solution in the evaporating basin has reduced by half.
      10. Leave the evaporating basin to cool. Once cool, move the evaporating basin to a warm                    place where it will not be disturbed(i.e a window-sill) and observe over the next few days.
Blue copper sulfate crystals should form.

discussion: Copper oxide + sulfuric acid -> water + copper sulfate. This means the oxide and the acid came together to make the water. The copper and sulfuric combined to make the copper sulfate which is the scientific name of the blue crystals.
